Freedom Project’s Civic Engagement & Education program is designed to equip system-impacted youth and communities with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to influence change through informed participation. We believe that civic education is more than understanding voting or policy—it’s about reclaiming our voices, shifting power, and reimagining justice.

Whether through interactive workshops, youth-led discussions, or creative events, we center the lived experience of those most impacted by systemic harm. By creating spaces for critical dialogue, collaborative learning, and cultural celebration, our program fosters agency, connection, and long-term community investment.

What we do

Youth Civic Engagement Events

We host in-person and virtual events that bring together young people to learn, build relationships, and explore civic responsibility. At our recent event, over 70 youth gathered for workshops, group discussions, and presentations focused on civic education, Black excellence, and leadership.

Civic 101 & Leadership Training

Participants gain a foundational understanding of government systems, policy change, and advocacy through trainings led by formerly incarcerated leaders and board members with lived expertise.

Food, Fellowship & Follow-Up

Workshops include breakout rooms, peer-led Q&As, and creative engagement like rap We know transformation happens in community. Every event includes shared meals, stipends for participants, and meaningful follow-up so the work continues long after the event ends., group reflections, and storytelling—centering joy, culture, and expression.

Too often, our communities are excluded from civic conversations and decisions that directly impact their lives. This program creates a pathway for system-impacted individuals—especially youth—to understand their rights, recognize their power, and become leaders in shaping a more just future.
