SUMMARY:How We See People: Anti Oppression / Mass Incarceration (Part 1)

What’s the impact on others? What lenses do we see through and where do these lenses come from? How are *we* seen? \nWhether we are overvalued or undervalued by society\, the ways that we are seen are influenced by multiple systems\, histories\, experiences and institutions. This workshop seeks to explain the systems and institutions that shape the ways we see ourselves and others so that we can be more accountable for the impacts: internalized racial superiority\, internalized racial inferiority\, prejudice\, fear and discrimination towards folks with conviction histories. \nThrough practice\, experience and discussion\, we will develop a basic anti-oppression framework\, especially useful for people who want to work in prison\, work with people in reentry\, or who work in nonprofits. We will also discuss the roots of racism and mass incarceration and how they intersect with other forms of oppression\, especially anti-Blackness. \nFreedom Project works to dismantle the institution of mass incarceration and heal its traumatic effects on our community. We’ve been supporting programs in Nonviolent Communication and mindfulness inside Washington State prisons and in reentry for over 18 years. We believe that a successful social movement needs collaboration between folks working to break down oppressive systems from the inside and the outside. This workshop is part of the work we do to understand why people are incarcerated; examine our implicit biases about race\, gender\, power and violence; and practice making empowered choices about how we see people. \nThis workshop will be held online via Zoom with frequent breaks throughout the day. Self-attendance matters\, so let us know of any accessibility needs you have to support your participation. This workshop is interactive and relational\, not a one-way presentation. \nTIMES: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM  **Because this workshop is relational\, the ending times are approximate.** \nThis is an all-ages event. This workshop is offered free of charge. \n(*This workshop is the first of two. Part 1 is required before you take Part 2. If you take Part 1\, you are encouraged\, not required\, to take Part 2.) \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Please sign up here to be added to the interest list. We will reach out once we have scheduled workshop dates.\nWe appreciate everyone’s patience while we prepare for the next community workshop. Look for an invitation soon to the October\, 2021 workshop as soon as a date has been confirmed. (There is no workshop on October 1\, our software just requires us to enter a date.) \nThanks so much! \n  \nHow We See People: Offered on Saturdays\, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\nHow do we see people? This workshop is offered free of charge. \n\n\nHow We Show Up: Anti-Oppression Deep Dive: Offered on Saturdays\, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\nPREREQUISITE: “How We See People: Anti-Oppression / Mass Incarceration Workshop”  Polishing our racial equity lens in ongoing work. The more we do the work\, the more we build the strength\, resilience and capacity to keep examining our biases\, deepening our awareness\, and showing up in ways that reduce harm and increase connection. Whether we are overvalued or undervalued by the systems around us\, we’ve all got work to do to as we take our awareness of our social identities into our work and life.\n“How We Show Up” is an ongoing series of community-building workshops that support us in seeing how we might impact or be impacted by others. We will rotate through different topics that help us identify racial equity and anti-oppression values as they show up in our daily life. Some of the key components we will cover include: \n\nA deeper dive into the practice of the anti-oppression skills that we learned in “How We See People”.\nThe importance of understanding the difference between our intentions and our impact.\nThe many-layered nuances of how to give and receive feedback when impact happens.\nUnpacking what it means to be an ally.\nUnderstanding the value of creating spaces outside of the gaze of white dominant culture.\n\nEach session will include a chance for folks to process what they are learning and what’s coming up in groups according to social identities like race or whether or not you have ever been incarcerated. \nTIME: 10:00 AM to 3: 00 PM. **Because this workshop is relational\, the ending time is approximate.** \nThis is an all-ages event. This workshop is offered free of charge. \n\n\n  \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

\nTIMES: 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM  **Because this workshop is relational\, the ending times are approximate.** \nThis is an all-ages event. This workshop is offered free of charge. \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

We will also discuss the roots of racism and mass incarceration and how they intersect with other forms of oppression. \nFreedom Project has been supporting programs in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and mindfulness inside Washington State prisons and in reentry for over 18 years. \nThis is an all-ages event. The more we do the work\, the more we build the strength\, resilience and capacity to keep examining our biases\, deepening our awareness\, and showing up in ways that reduce harm and increase connection. Whether we are overvalued or undervalued by the systems around us\, we’ve all got work to do to as we take our awareness of our social identities into our work and life. \n“How We Show Up” is an ongoing series of community-building workshops that support us in seeing how we might impact or be impacted by others. We will rotate through different topics that help us identify racial equity and anti-oppression values as they show up in our daily life. Some of the key components we will cover include: \n\nA deeper dive into the practice of the anti-oppression skills that we learned in “How We See People”.\nThe importance of understanding the difference between our intentions and our impact.\nThe many-layered nuances of how to give and receive feedback when impact happens.\nUnpacking what it means to practice allyship.\nUnderstanding the value of creating spaces outside of the gaze of white dominant culture.\n\nEach session will include a chance for folks to process what they are learning and what’s coming up in groups according to social identities like race or whether or not you have ever been incarcerated. \nThis is an all-ages event. This workshop is offered free of charge.\n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

We create spaces where those indirectly impacted have the opportunity to be in community with others who have shared experiences. We strive to address issues such as trauma\, shame and isolation that often result from secondary trauma. We aspire to assist loved ones in meeting needs for connection\, support\, and resources. Our goal is to encourage empowerment and build leadership voices to be strong advocates for systemic change. \nIncarceration hurts everyone. The community\, the family\, and the individual. It can disrupt the family’s ability to achieve stability in every major life area; financially\, emotionally\, spiritually\, and physically. When loved ones transition home the couple or family continue to experience an array of disadvantages from establishing employment to finding housing. The circumstances created by oppressive systems and entrenched stigma put an incredible strain on couples and families. We often have the unique experience of truly seeing and loving the people we are in relationship with\, but not being able to get the support we need from others or due to the shame attached to incarceration. \nAs family\, friends\, and partners we can find ourselves feeling isolated and misunderstood even by the people closest to us. Often times it can be a struggle to find balance between managing the pressures of our daily obligations and responsibilities while supporting our loved ones on the inside. There are times when our loved ones are experiencing so much duress as a result of the negative impact of incarceration that it may not be appropriate to voice our concerns with them either. Whether you are a parent\, partner\, child\, friend\, or other family of a loved one on the inside we would love to hear from you. Mostly we want you to know you are not alone. In the effort to community build your wisdom and support is needed in the circle as well as any resources you might be able to share. \nWe work directly with Freedom Project as well as other community providers to gain access to resources. While we want the family circle to be a place for healing and support we also want people to get access to tangible support such as items and/or advocacy. You are welcome to call and share and relationship build or stop by just to provide a resource or ask about a resources. We strive to address and meet whatever need is present. During COVID 19 we are meeting in a zoom room every 2nd and 4th Sunday at 3:00. If groups are not your thing or you prefer one-on-one we do check in calls monthly. You are also welcome to leave your camera off during zoom calls. We want to take time to acknowledge everything going on in our country right now and the additional stress on families due to COVID 19. We are struggling to stay in contact with our loved ones and there is much anxiety about what to expect. Please know that we are here for you and look forward to being a support.\n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
