Nonviolent Communication programs on the rise at women’s prisons in Washington state

By Sue McCarthy, Director of Programming

Freedom Project’s presence in women’s prisons in Washington state continues to grow. In 2014  we offered a few Mindfulness classes and 1- or 2-day quarterly Nonviolent Communication (NVC) workshops at women’s prisons in Belfair or Gig Harbor.

This year we have ramped up to meet increased demand among women in these prisons. We held a series of monthly 1-day themed NVC workshops earlier in the year at the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) and just last month concluded a 2-day introductory NVC workshop at Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women (MCCCW).

Currently we are in the process of relaunching a weekly class at WCCW in Gig Harbor–a program that hasn’t been offered there for over 10 years. For more about the growing interest in Nonviolent Communication at women’s prisons, see related articles.
